GRASSROOTS BROADCAST
OBS GUIDE

Made for running a tournament on your own. About ten minutes the first time: import the scenes, pick your cams, add the dock and link it to OBS. After that you mostly press one big button, and Autopilot does a lot of the switching for you.

Before you start

1 Import the scenes

  1. In OBS open Scene Collection, then Import.
  2. Press the ... button, go to the folder above and pick Grassroots_Scene_Collection.json. Make sure it is ticked, then press Import.
  3. Open Scene Collection again and choose Grassroots Broadcast.

Pick the file from inside the package folder. OBS uses the folder the file is in to find every screen, so it works wherever you unzipped it. Moved the folder later? Import it again from the new place.

Eight scenes, in the order of the night:

Starting SoonBig title, a countdown and the two teams.
Caster DeskCam 1 and Cam 2 with name bars and the series score.
DraftPicks and bans with both teams on top, filled from the dock.
In GameYour game with small score plates beside the game's own score bar. Nothing in the corners, so the minimap, team lists, gold and stats table stay clear.
Post GameThe game's end screen in a frame, the result and the series score.
VictoryThe team that won, full screen, with confetti. Plays each time you switch to it.
Be Right BackPause screen with an optional countdown.
Thanks for WatchingWhat is up next and your socials.

2 Pick your cams and the game

  1. Cam 1 and Cam 2 are empty to start. Double click each one in the Caster Desk scene and pick a camera.
  2. Casting alone? Click the eye next to Cam 2 to hide it, and leave the Cam 2 name empty in the dock.
  3. SMITE 2 captures the game window (In Game and Post Game). Start the game once so OBS can find it.
  4. Desktop Audio and Mic use your default devices. Change them by double clicking.

3 Add the dock

  1. In OBS open the Docks menu (in some versions it is under View, then Docks) and choose Custom Browser Docks.
  2. Type Grassroots Dock in Dock Name.
  3. Paste this in URL:
  1. Press Apply and close the window. Drag the dock where you want it. A tall dock works best.

A plain path to controller.html works too, like C:\Users\You\Desktop\Grassroots-Package\controller.html (leave out any " marks): when the dock opens inside OBS it moves itself to the right address.

4 Link the dock to OBS

This is what lets the dock switch scenes for you, so do not skip it.

  1. In OBS open Tools, WebSocket Server Settings. Tick Enable WebSocket server and press Apply.
  2. Press Show Connect Info and copy the Server Password.
  3. In the dock open OBS LINK, paste the password and press Link OBS. The chip at the top turns to OBS linked.

The dock remembers it and links again by itself next time.

5 Running a match

The top of the dock is your remote: what is on air, one big NEXT button that always shows the next scene, and a button for every scene. Below it, the steps of the night in order.

Autopilot shows each switch in the dock a few seconds before it happens. Press Stay here to cancel one, or turn Autopilot off and use NEXT yourself. Performance mode (in OBS LINK) stops all movement on the screens for slower PCs.

6 The stinger

Grassroots Stinger is already the scene transition: rounded bars in violet, cream, green and gold slide across, a round badge pops in the middle, then the bars slide off. It has its own whoosh and pop.

If it ever goes missing: in Scene Transitions press +, pick Stinger, choose media\GR_Stinger.webm from the package and set Transition Point to 520 milliseconds.

Fixes

Screens are black.

Go down this list, checking after each one.

  1. Open Scene Collection and make sure Grassroots Broadcast is the one ticked.
  2. Did OBS show a Missing Files box? The scene file was picked from somewhere else, like Downloads. Do step 1 again and pick the file from inside the package folder.
  3. In OBS open Settings, Advanced. Under Sources untick Enable Browser Source Hardware Acceleration, press OK and restart OBS.
  4. Still black? Press this button. It makes a scene file with the full address of this folder written in. Import that one (it is in your Downloads) and pick the newest Grassroots Broadcast.

The folder shown in step 1 is wrong?

Type it, then press the button again. The dock address in step 3 changes too.

The dock says "No screens open", or the screens do not change.

The dock address points at a different folder than the screens. Put in the address from step 3 of this page, then right click a screen in OBS and press Refresh. If the dock is linked to OBS it also shows a yellow box with a button that points the screens at the dock.

Autopilot does nothing.

It needs the dock linked to OBS (step 4). Check the switch under the NEXT button is on.

OBS will not link.

Make sure the WebSocket server is enabled and the password is the one from Show Connect Info. The address is ws://127.0.0.1:4455 unless you changed the port.

The score plates cover something in the game.

They sit either side of the game's own score bar, made for the SMITE 2 spectator view at 1920x1080. If your layout differs, click GR In Game in the In Game scene and move it with the arrow keys.
